World’s premier ground-based observations facility advancing atmospheric research

Sally McFarlane Named DOE ARM Program Manager

Published: 9 July 2014

Sally McFarlane rejoins the ARM team as the new DOE ARM Facility Program Manager, replacing Wanda Ferrell who retired June 30.

On July 1, Dr. Sally McFarlane took a new role in the U.S. Department of Energy as the program manager for the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, a national scientific user facility, after Dr. Wanda Ferrell’s retirement. After a year and half as a program co-manager for Atmospheric System Research (ASR), McFarlane now will be responsible for ARM operations and science.

“Sally comes to this position with impeccable credentials,” said Dr. Gary Geernaert, DOE’s Climate and Environmental Sciences Division Director in the Office of Biological and Environmental Research in an email announcing her appointment. “She has an extensive set of research contributions in atmospheric and climate sciences, and she has deep familiarity of both ARM and the national laboratory system.”

Prior to joining DOE, McFarlane was a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the Climate Physics Group and actively involved in the ARM Facility. She is an author of nearly 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and has a B.A. in physics and mathematics from Mount Holyoke College and her Ph.D. in astrophysical, planetary, and atmospheric sciences from the University of Colorado.

ARM Technical Director Dr. Jim Mather said, “We are very excited and pleased to be working with Sally in her new role. We look forward to Sally advancing the ARM Facility in the years to come as we work to better link high-resolution observations and models.”
