ARM is looking for weather radar engineers and data analysts

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility is expanding its radar team to support ongoing operations and new capabilities, as well as advance the utility of ARM radar data for scientific applications.
ARM’s radar team includes a group of engineers and technicians responsible for the operations and maintenance of microwave and millimeter wavelength radars deployed around the world. In addition, the radar team has a group of scientists, engineers, and technicians responsible for characterizing and processing ARM cloud and precipitation radar data. The data and hardware engineering groups that make up ARM’s radar team work to ensure the data output is calibrated and of research quality for the scientific community.
The following ARM radar job postings are now open at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Washington state:
- Senior Weather Radar Data Analyst
- Weather Radar Data Analyst
- Weather Radar Engineer – Mid Career
- Weather Radar Engineer – Early Career.
The weather radar data analyst and senior weather radar data analyst will characterize and process ARM radar measurements, quantify radar measurement uncertainty, and improve calibration and measurement analyses. The senior weather radar data analyst will additionally provide leadership for communications within the ARM radar team and with users of ARM radar data, and support the development of new radar capabilities, potentially to include a shift to solid-state transmitters and phased array antenna technology.
The successful candidates for the early career and mid-career weather radar engineer positions have the ability to troubleshoot complex systems that include radio frequency and electronic components and electromechanical systems and have general engineering experience. Day-to-day duties involve the installation, repair, upgrade, calibration, maintenance, and operational assessment of the radars in the global ARM radar network, including regular travel to radar sites. The mid-career weather radar engineer will additionally have experience with solid-state transmitters and phased array antenna technology, along with the design of radar subsystems.
For the full radar job descriptions, including qualifications, and to apply online, please view the individual job postings on PNNL’s website. The postings are set to close at 4 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
