Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) are collaborating with Dr. Lynn Russell (Scripps) as part of the EPCAPE project conducted at Mt. Soledad, La Jolla, California. Throughout the year-long campaign, and during more focused shorter studies, ECCC instrumentation including a counter flow virtual impactor (CVI) and chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS) will be deployed at the Mt. Soledad site. These instruments are used to collect cloud droplets during cloud events, which are then evaporated to yield both droplet residuals and evaporated trace gases. This allows droplet residue to be sampled by various other collaborators involved in EPCAPE, while traces gases evolved will be characterized with the CIMS. The resultant data collected represents cloud processes that are associated with air masses across the west coast, including from polluted region such as Los Angeles. Combining the group of ECCC instruments together will allow for an unprecedented understanding of cloud droplet chemistry and composition, including the speciation of the organic content of cloud water, which will be linked to oxidative processes within cloud, and provide a means to investigate the role of trace gases in cloud activation and chemistry.
