Alternative Doppler Lidar Operations

2 June 2025 - 27 June 2025

Lead Scientist: Timothy Juliano

Observatory: AMF (ARM Mobile Facility 3)

To better understand boundary layer variability near the surface and the impacts of forest canopies, we would like the Doppler lidars at the BNF site to be operated in a mode with higher time resolution for the vertical wind profiles over a 45-min window each hour, followed by a 15-min window of RHI scans along the wind direction. The alternating vertical profile and RHI scanning will be repeated each hour during June 2 - 27 to obtain statistics over different ambient meteorological conditions. This will enable the computation of momentum fluxes and understand wind variabilities just above canopy height.

These measurements will be used to compute turbulence quantities, such as momentum fluxes and TKE and compared with LES and mesoscale model predictions.
