TBS ozone profiles during CoURAGE summer IOP

21 July 2025 - 5 August 2025

Lead Scientist: Paul Walter

Observatory: AMF (ARM Mobile Facility 1)

Measurements of ozone (O3) will be collected during the two-week summer Intensive Operational Period (IOP) of the Coast-Urban-Rural Atmospheric Gradient Experiment (CoURAGE) at the tethered balloon system (TBS) site. An En-Sci 2Z electrochemical ozonesonde will be on the TBS and collect vertical ozone profiles while a 2BTech Model 205 Ozone Monitor will collect continuous ozone measurements near the surface. Surface measurements of meteorological variables will also be collected (i.e., pressure, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction). The ozonesonde measurements will complement the aerosol and meteorological measurements from the TBS to help improve understanding of differences in atmospheric composition in and just above the marine layer near the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. The measurements will also complement other vertical profile ozone measurements collected from the NASA Tropospheric Ozone Lidar Network (TOLNet) at the CoURAGE M1 site in Baltimore and at Hart Miller Island as part of the affiliated ARM field campaign (AFC) CoURAGE SWARM.
